ICELAND BENEATH THE AURORAL OVAL

Iceland is one of the few places on Earth where the night sky itself becomes the destination. From early September through mid-April, the country’s long, dark hours and its position directly beneath the auroral oval combine to produce some of the most reliable northern lights viewing conditions anywhere in the world. Slow-moving ribbons of jade-green light cross the sky in shifting waves, sometimes for minutes, sometimes for hours, and never quite the same way twice.

The science behind the spectacle is dramatic in its own right. Charged particles from the sun collide with the Earth’s magnetic field, releasing energy that ignites the upper atmosphere in colour. Activity peaks within an 11-year solar cycle, most recently topping out in late 2024, while the spring and autumn equinoxes bring an additional advantage in the form of the Russell-McPherron effect, when seasonal magnetic alignment statistically boosts the odds of a strong display. A new moon, clear skies and a willingness to move toward better weather are the final ingredients.
