Northern Lights
ICELAND BENEATH THE AURORAL OVAL
Iceland is one of the few places on Earth where the night sky itself becomes the destination. From early September through mid-April, the country’s long, dark hours and its position directly beneath the auroral oval combine to produce some of the most reliable northern lights viewing conditions anywhere in the world. Slow-moving ribbons of jade-green light cross the sky in shifting waves, sometimes for minutes, sometimes for hours, and never quite the same way twice.
The science behind the spectacle is dramatic in its own right. Charged particles from the sun collide with the Earth’s magnetic field, releasing energy that ignites the upper atmosphere in colour. Activity peaks within an 11-year solar cycle, most recently topping out in late 2024, while the spring and autumn equinoxes bring an additional advantage in the form of the Russell-McPherron effect, when seasonal magnetic alignment statistically boosts the odds of a strong display. A new moon, clear skies and a willingness to move toward better weather are the final ingredients.
A PRIVATELY GUIDED PURSUIT
Private Travel Iceland approaches the northern lights as something to be sought out, not waited for. Each evening is shaped by the latest aurora forecast and weather, with a dedicated PTI guide tracking conditions in real time and routing you toward the clearest skies. Whether that means a short transfer from your hotel or repositioning across regions, the plan adjusts as the night does.
Warm stops are built into every pursuit, at sheltered vantage points well away from public tour groups. The pace is entirely yours, whether you prefer a focused evening close to Reykjavik or a longer chase further afield. For guests staying at our hand-picked luxury lodges and retreats beyond the city, your guide remains on hand to monitor conditions through the evening. For an elevated perspective, private helicopter charters can be arranged when conditions allow, offering access and a vantage point that is simply not possible from the ground. Transport, guiding and coordination with your wider itinerary are handled discreetly throughout.
