INTO ICELAND’S HIGHLANDS

The Highlands cover much of Iceland’s interior, a vast plateau of black sand, rhyolite mountains, glacial rivers and active volcanic systems that lies almost entirely empty of roads, towns and people. Access is restricted to a few months each summer, when the F-roads open and conditions allow vehicles to cross unbridged rivers and reach the regions beyond. Even then, the terrain demands serious capability and serious local knowledge.

This is the part of Iceland most travellers never see. The rhyolite peaks of Landmannalaugar shift in colour through the day, the rivers of the interior run silver against the dark ground, and the glaciers of Langjokull and Hofsjokull rise above it all. Distances are deceptive, weather changes quickly, and the sense of scale is unlike anywhere else in the country.

Pacing is deliberately unhurried. Stops are made at viewpoints, geothermal springs and quiet locations well away from the few public access points, with time built in to walk, photograph and absorb the scale of the landscape. Refreshments and a prepared lunch are provided, chosen in advance for the day.

For an even greater sense of perspective, Super 4×4 days can be combined with helicopter transfers and remote landings, opening up areas that would otherwise take a full day to reach by ground.
